Thursday Thoughts: Becoming Who You Are

There is a really great E.E. Cummings quote that reads "it take courage to grow and and become who you really are." Recently, I have found myself having to make a lot of difficult decisions from what to study, classes, and activities that all seem to be a major factor in shaping who I want to be. It's funny, because as I was packing for school, I found a list that I wrote last year from orientation that had all the goals that I wanted to accomplish by the time I graduated. Listed out were about 20 things that I wanted to do, that ranged from a certain GPA, to activities that I wanted to do and personal goals. As I was reading the list I sort of started laughing to myself. In one year, I had already changed so much from that list and it made me wonder what I will be like in 3 years walking across the stage of Bertrand Library.

I think it's funny, because we always seem to have this idea of destiny- of setting a very clear path that goes from point A to point B with little room for variation. I remember when I was in 5th grade we went to our middle school orientation and type A 11 year old Emma had a pen and paper and had made a strategic list of all the clubs and activities that she was going to do. Well I can assure you that 14 year old Emma at 8th grade promotion was very different, but that's ok. I remember having a very tough 8th grade year, but that shaped me so much into the high schooler I became.
To end with a just as cliche way of starting (in a very quotey mood today) Have a great start to the weekend and "Throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."
