Thursday Thoughts: Goals.

Somewhere on my YouTube homepage, I was suggested a Justin Bieber interview to watch. (For the record, I was the biggest Belieber in 2010 and may have gotten those ridiculous teen tabloids for the posters.) Nonetheless, I clicked on it and was really surprised with how articulate he was throughout the discussions about his music and personal life. One thing in particular that stood out was hearing him talk about his own take on fame and happiness- and the difference between the two. His own happiness came from work and self fulfillment, not validation or things.

I am definitely someone who is always thinking of "the next."  A package can keep us happy, but then we're thinking about the next one. Achieving a goal is great, but then we're thinking about the next thing and what was once something that we strived for is now just a stepping stone. In some ways, this is healthy, but getting into the mindset of "I need this to happen before I am happy" can be toxic. I love this Carrey quote because it sums up the message so perfectly. Thursday Thoughts are one of the most challenging, because I have no idea what I'm doing either and by taking the time to reflect is extremely therapeutic. Over the next week, I'm going to try and focus on the little great things in the journey instead of obsession over the final product.

To end with a favorite quote from one of the best books from childhood, “maybe the truth is, there's a little bit of loser in all of us. Being happy isn't having everything in your life be perfect. Maybe it's about stringing together all the little things.” (Thanks Ann Brashares!) Have a great weekend and happy spring break to all of my Bucknellians!
